Less Effort Road, Chapter 2, The Old Foundation

They packed in the  morning, in the afternoon, and finally, with the last chair tied on the old truck, they bounced out on the dirt road to  a place where they can find freedom from  things that they had  no  part in.

Astrid packed too much food. Without a cooler, they had to eat more than they wanted to so it wouldn't go to waste. Alfred sold a few sandwiches at a farm busy with workers, but not nearly enough or enough to make up the loss. He beamed anyway at his good luck to sell anything. The poor young man, and his misfortunes being in a rush to fill his life over the brim with grief, missed opportunities, and losses. Not anymore.

They left that place without selling. Eventually the land will filter down to the last one on the deed, and whoever they have as kin by then. Being gone brought them smiles they forget they had. Leaving her behind, holding onto the ground, her choice. She swore the young man, Otis Joseph Valen, will suffer her wrath for a while beyond the miles because she put out the news among the unliving to be sure he stays unhappy for a while. He hunched over like his next breath is his last until they were over the state line where his spirit friends told him he would be safe, and they wouldn't have a war on their ghostly hands. He faked being sad to leave her as best he was able.

When his spirit friends appear that first night of his freedom, they tell him the sad news they don't know how she died or where she's buried. Otis hope to know without her knowing he cared. If she knew, then she'd be there with him forever draining all happiness out of his life.

So that's why the hole is there. The house was left to rot and become over grown. She walks the dirt road hoping and hoping for somebody she can lure there so she can enter their spirit zone.  She's pleased with Laralyn, but unsure of John. Once she manages to visit a body, it has been a long time, the search will continue, to find the hole she's buried in.
